“The One Thing” Book Review – Can We Really Focus on Just One Thing?

I am going through my second listen of The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. I thought this would be a perfect book to take a deeper look into and see if it can help us be more focused.

What is The One Thing?

The One Thing is not just a book, it’s a concept. It’s a concept that originally came out of the movie City Slickers.

Choosing your One Thing is the main goal. The main One Thing is your purpose in life. From there, it can be broken down further and further until you get to the One Thing that you can do right now to achieve a certain goal. I’ll explain a bit more about that a little later.

This is talked about as a domino effect in the book. One little domino has enough force to knock down thousands of other dominoes.

Your one focused thing has enough force and power behind it to create an energetic shift. Your one focused thing leads to the next one focused thing which leads to the next. Pretty soon, you’ve got a major goal achieved. But it all started with One Thing.

Are you starting to get an idea of what this book is all about?

Focus

I would say the main idea of The One Thing is focus. Unwavering focus.

Have you heard that’s an important thing to have when you’re setting out to achieve a goal? It’s a common theme among those in the self-development world.

Looking back on the times of my life when I’ve achieved a goal, laser focus was an important part of the journey.

The One Thing helps you pinpoint that laser focus. It kind of goes like this…

Your Purpose –> What’s the one thing I can do right now so that I can achieve my daily goal, so that I can achieve my weekly goal, so that I can achieve my monthly goal, so that I can achieve my yearly goal, so that I can achieve my 5-year goal, so that I can fulfill my purpose?

What The One Thing does is bring your focus all the way to the now. This very moment. What can I do at this moment in time to help me achieve my goal. This is something that I think about daily.

There is only right now. What can I do right now…

It’s Not Just for Business

The One Thing is not just for people in business, or who want to climb the ladder at work. While this is considered a business book, The One Thing can be used in all areas of your life. In fact, it should be used in all areas of your life.

“What’s the ONE THING I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

– for my spiritual life
– for my physical health
– for my personal life
– for my key relationships
– for my job
– for my business
– for my finances

The One Thing chart

ALL of these areas are important and they ALL need focus.

For instance, over the winter, I put on a few pounds. Now I’d like to get rid of them. So, I ask myself “What’s the one thing I can do for my physical health such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

It might be going for a run. Or putting the sugar cookie down that my daughter just made. (Doesn’t she know it’s almost bathing suit season?!) Maybe it’s making a salad for lunch.

You can ask the same thing for your family life. How can you make your family life better right now? Maybe it’s going to dinner together. Or making a phone call to a family member. Or planning a fun vacation or activity.

Why I Recommend The One Thing

I don’t generally listen or read too many books more than one time. It’s not because I don’t like them, but there’s just so many that I want to read or listen to that I don’t want to use that time listening to something I’ve already heard.

So, when I do read or listen to a book more than once, you can rest assured that it’s good and the information is important and useful.

I’ve given you a general idea of what The One Thing is about, however, there is much, much more to it.

  • The phrase “What’s the one thing I can do…” is broken down so that you understand the significance of each part.
  • The authors give ideas of time blocking. What it is, how to do it, and its importance to your goals.
  • They give you that things will come up in your life that will try to hinder your goals and ways to combat those challenges.

Over 2,300 customers on Amazon have given it 4.5 stars, so you can see that others feel the same way I do about this fantastic book.

The One Thing gets great reviews

If there are areas of your life that you want to change and you have big goals to get there, then I definitely recommend The One Thing to help you get that laser focus in place so that achieving your goals will be easier and more fulfilling.
